Laundromat, Laundry Service or Dry Cleaner? How to Pick in Sydney
Three ways to get the washing done, three different things you are actually paying for. Here is how they compare on price, time and what they can handle.

Most people default to whichever option they used last. That is fine until the week a doona needs washing, or a suit needs cleaning, or the machine breaks, and then it is worth knowing what each option is good at.
What a laundromat actually costs
Across Sydney, a self-service wash runs roughly $6 to $9 depending on machine size, and drying another $5 to $9 depending on how long you feed it. Call it $12 to $18 a load.
The part nobody counts is the time. Drive over, load, wait 30 minutes, move everything to a dryer, wait another 40, fold on a bench, drive home. Two hours is a fair estimate for a single load, and most of it is spent waiting next to a machine.
- Cheapest per load if your time is free that afternoon
- Immediate, you walk out with clean clothes the same day
- Big machines handle a doona your home machine cannot
- You do the sorting, the moving and the folding

What a pickup laundry service costs
We charge $30 for a standard load of about 5kg, roughly a standard laundry basket, plus $10 pickup and delivery per order, with a $45 minimum including tax. Washing, drying and folding are all included, and it comes back within 24–48 hours.
The delivery fee is per order, not per load, which is why the comparison changes with volume. One load costs more than a laundromat. Three loads in the same pickup is $100, about $35 an hour cheaper than doing it yourself, if you count the afternoon.
$12–$18
A laundromat load, washed and dried, plus about two hours
$40
One load collected, washed, dried, folded and returned, no hours
$100
Three loads in one pickup, because delivery is charged once
If the washing is already clean and the folding is the problem, Sort & Fold is $3 per kilogram, covered in our guide to fold-only laundry.
When you need a dry cleaner instead
Neither of the above helps with a wool coat. Dry cleaning uses solvent rather than water, which is what keeps tailored and delicate garments their original shape and colour. It is priced per item: business shirts $12, blazers $18, a two-piece suit $30.
Send to a dry cleaner anything that is:
- Labelled dry clean only, the label is a manufacturer instruction, not a suggestion
- Tailored and structured: suits, blazers, formal dresses, coats
- Wool, silk, cashmere, velvet, or anything lined
- Pleated, beaded or embellished
We collect dry cleaning on the same pickup as the washing, see how dry cleaning pickup and delivery works.
Which to choose, by situation
- One load, needed today: laundromat. Nothing beats walking out with it done.
- A full week of washing for a household: pickup service. Several loads share one delivery fee and you lose no time at all.
- Doonas, blankets and mattress toppers: either, but check drying. A laundromat dryer works; a home machine usually does not. Bedding prices are here.
- Anything tailored or labelled dry clean only: dry cleaner, always.
- No machine at home: compare a weekly pickup against a weekly laundromat trip, at two or more loads a week the pickup usually wins on both counts.

A note on cost per wear
The cheapest wash is the one that does not ruin the garment. Hot water on wool, a domestic dryer on anything with elastane, or a doona that never dried through, each of those costs more than the wash that caused it. Whichever option you pick, the care label is the part worth reading.

FAQ
Laundromat and laundry service questions
Is a laundry service cheaper than a laundromat?
Not per load. A Sydney laundromat is usually $12 to $18 once you have washed and dried, and we charge $30 a load plus $10 pickup and delivery per order. The gap closes when you send several loads at once, because the delivery fee is charged once, and it closes completely if you value the two hours a laundromat trip takes.
What is the difference between a laundry service and a dry cleaner?
A laundry service washes in water and charges per load, that covers everyday clothing, towels and bedding. A dry cleaner uses solvent for garments that water would shrink, stretch or fade, and charges per item: a two-piece suit is $30. We do both on the same collection, so you do not need to choose a provider for each.
Do laundromats wash your clothes for you?
Some offer a drop-off service where staff wash and fold for you, usually priced per kilogram, but you are still making two trips during their opening hours. A pickup service does the same washing without either trip.
When is a laundromat the better choice?
When you need it washed right now, when you have one small load and no minimum order to reach, or when you are between homes and have no machine at all. A laundromat is immediate, and that is worth something.
